The husband and I have worked in the cabin over the past year and we have made some pretty dramatic changes, dare I say improvements, to the kitchen/dining room.
First we started off with painting all the cabinets and placing a decorative insert into the recessed areas of the cabinets. This was all completed with Annie Sloan Paint and Wax.
This is what the kitchen looked like when the paint was completed
But we still had the issue of how to increase our storage and to keep it looking nice. I had this idea that I could get two cabinets from Lowes and finish them with black stain and add a countertop to them. Then I thought we could do shelving units over the top of them. I love the look of industrial finishes and decided to use these metal pieces to create the structure to hold the shelves.
I also decided when I was at Lowes that the cost for a countertop was INSANE so I decided to use lumber for the top of the cabinets as well as the shelving.
Here is one of the cabinets before
The process during
And the grand finale
I hope you like what we did. We absolutely LOVE IT. Whenever we walk into the cabin I look over to that side and it just makes me smile.
Gorgeous!! Wonderful idea.
Thank you Ruth@
Please tell me about the inserts used on the cabinet doors……such a great look…..thanks
Hi Toni!
The inserts were made out of a headboard that I got at Lowes. The husband cut them down to size and we put them in with liquid nails and then painted and treated them like the rest of the original cabinet.
Hi
looks great! What type of lumber did you use for the top of the new cabinets?
Hi Dean!
We used a redwood that we selected from a lumber yard.
Why did u paint the new cabinet black? Great use of space and love the shelves but the black cabinet looks odd to me it does not flow with the other cabinets. Otherwise great idea.
Hi Linda!
We painted the new cabinets black because it wouldn’t have flowed correctly as we couldn’t have made the countertops match. So we decided to make it something completely different otherwise it would just look “off” every time we look at it. But I super appreciate your input!
